In recent upcoming news, U.S. based firm- Bioenergy DevCo, has acquired BTS Biogas. Headquartered in Bruneck, Italy, BTS Biogas is a European pioneer in the field of anaerobic digestion with a 20-year history in the industry and 200 plants located around the world. The main purpose of this is for expansion (obviously) but more importantly expansion of anaerobic digestion in North America.
What is “Anaerobic Digestion” you must be thinking! Anaerobic Digestion is a series of biological processes that involve micro-organisms working on biodegradable materials in the absence of oxygen to break it down into one of the end products- biogas. This can be used for the generation of electricity and heat or even can be processed into renewable natural gas and transportation fuels.
Organic waste is generally incinerated or thrown in large landfills where it rots and releases a harmful gas that we all have heard of namely Methane. It is a major contributor to world air pollution resulting in climate change. Bioenergy DevCo aims to reduce this carbon footprint and in turn generate useful materials for our daily lives using anaerobic digester technology.
The 2 main useful materials are a) natural gas which can be burned cleanly and turned into a versatile source of renewable energy by being injected into a national electric grid or used as a transportation fuel as compressed natural gas and b) a product called “digestate”, an organic soil amendment with the same organic and stormwater management capability as compost.
This acquisition certainly brings to fruition new evolution in the generation of renewable bioenergy and natural gas using advanced technology.
