United Arab Emirates is moving towards an energy reform as the world faces a climate emergency. Also, part reason for the energy shift is the depleting oil reserves of the nation.
UAE has set some ambitious visions for its energy sector and expects them to be achieved and it aims at doing so by collaborating with countries and research institutions. Now with commercial rollout of 5G technology in the next year, UAE is hoping that this blazing fast communications technology will help to revolutionize their energy sector. Khalifa al Shamsi, chief strategy and governance officer of Etisalat Group, a UAE based telecom group stated that 5G and digitalization of the energy sector will create new innovations also open innovation between different industries will lead to some of the best eco-friendly business models and bring success to the nation’s energy vision. The officer gave a keynote speech about how the technology and the energy vision are related and how it can be beneficial to the energy industry in the coming future. His keynote was titled ‘Leveraging 5G to Drive Sustainability & Enable innovation in the Energy Sector’ during the 24th World Energy Congress (WEC) held from 9–12 September at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center.
It will be interesting to see how the UAE will tackle the field of renewable energy and integrate technology into the mix to benefit from the new emerging technology. Now with IoT and electric vehicles, it will be interesting to see how UAE builds its infrastructure around a clean and energy-efficient environment. Being a petroleum-based economy and energy sector, the world is watching UAE’s clean transition.
