Police broke up a protest in Germany at Datteln 4 coal-fired power plant against the 100 environmental activists but the protesters had planned further demonstrations.
The protest is against carbon emissions from coal burning, as the members had occupied the site location for nine hours while blocking conveyor belts. The group had also protested against the occupation of utility RWE’s Hambah Forest last year which ultimately led to a stoppage on mining and made the facility a symbol of anti-coal protest.
The protesters celebrated the demonstration as a beginning. The protesters were wearing orange and face masks with banners that stated exit coal and slogans like 20-year profits instead of the future. Datteln 4 which is a modern hard coal plant with cost operator utility Uniper 1.5 billion euros was exempted from a plan to exit from coal power by 2038 which was approved by Chancellor Angela Merkel’s cabinet last month.
Environmentalists stated that the government lacked ambition and allowed coal operators to get off lightly and have criticized to compromise.
