With Scotland declaring climate emergency earlier this year, we thought it made clear that was very serious regarding the fate of our home planet. But some recent developments show otherwise.
Scotland is renowned name in the clean and green energy field. It has become a role model for sustainable and clean living as it has made its economy into a very green economy. Scotland announced Climate Emergency in April this year. With the Scottish people demanding the climate concerns to be taken more seriously as the climate deteriorates rapidly the government has been under immense pressure to abandon the fossil fuels and other conventional means of energy which cause harm to the environment. But in the light of new information, some companies are making plans to establish oil refineries and other similar plants, which can set back the climate more and just increase the speed of its deterioration. This can happen as there is very less that we’re doing to help stop the changing climate and more we are doing to deteriorate it. The Scottish Government’s action program for its third national planning framework says that “an application is expected in 2019 to replace the existing plant with a new state of the art refinery complex” at Grangemouth. The plan has also been mentioned by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.
Dr. Richard Dixon, director of Friends of the Earth Scotland has stated that the world is on track for climate catastrophe, with more floods, storms, droughts and wildfires, the death of all our coral reefs and mass extinction of nature like never seen before in the history. He also said that establishment of gas terminals, refineries, gas power fire stations are not the projects that aid the Scottish announcement of emergency of Climate and if they really are calling it an emergency then these projects should be deemed as unapproved in the coming future.
