When Extinction Rebellion started their global “climate crisis” revolts more than a week ago, they may have genuinely encouraged citizens to take part. Just not the way they thought. First, we had Londoners bringing a quick end to the underground train reveal. Then, there are the constant revolts by the Dutch farmers, as their government wants to reduce both nitrogen and carbon emissions.
Now, child climate scare-monger Greta Thunberg’s climate change rally has been ruined by a counter-protest headed by a truck convoy of oil and gas employees in Canada; they converged on the provincial capital Edmonton. “We are doing this because our future is at risk, ‘We will not be bystanders. We are doing this because we want the people in power to come together behind science,’ Thunberg said to the people.
To that, a counter-protester said: ‘We value the environment, of course, we do. What they need to come to terms with is that we’re hurting, and we also have to care about Alberta jobs.’ The honking horns of big rig trucks roared from a thoroughfare close by, where vehicles decorated with ‘We love Canada energy’ signs were driving up and down.
‘When they powered up their iPhones last night, that power came from this factory,’ he said, pointing to the previously coal-fired Keephills power plant that was being transformed to natural gas.
‘Albertans and Canadians are realists,’ he said. ‘They like practical solutions. Calling for the end of the modern industrial economy, recommending turn millions of people unemployed is not a real solution.’
